Almost stole it at the end, despite being a Romanian orphan
24th Nov: Widcombe 1 Nailsea 1

After last weeks drubbing in the Somerset FA Cup it was time for Nailsea to restore some pride with a tricky looking away trip to Bath to play Widcombe Corinthians.

On a damp and dreary day, the football was never going to be easy. But both teams dug in and worked their socks off.
With the Hewlett plying his trade up front for a change, Nailsea were always going to hold the ball up well. Hall was also showing some promising touches and hold up play.

In a tight game, Nailsea took the lead through Mark with a cross from the left that looped over the Widcombe keeper. Widombe replied with their striker breaking clear of the Nailsea back line and slotting calmly past 'Calamity' Moss, who just admitted to me over the phone that he should have saved it ;o)

With the scores level at the break, chances continued to come few and far between in the second half. The Hass continued producing some sterling work in the centre of midfield, winning good headers and even popping a couple of great balls into the box. But unfortunatley nobody was quick thinking enough to capitalise on them.

The back four looked comfortable for most of the game with Nobes excelling until his old bones could take no more and he was substituted by the younger, but rounder Woodward.

With 15 minutes to go and the scoreline still 1-1, the game was there for the taking. But Nailsea just couldn't muster up anything to take control of the match - they were running on empty! Despite Widcombe probably having the best of the remainder of the game, Hall nearly stole it at the end with a powerful run into the box. He was just denied by a combination of a lunging keeper and last ditch challenge from the defender.

At the end of the day though it was a decent Nailsea reponse to last weeks humiliation. Small steps of progress towards the football that we know we're capable of.
